Fresh talks over famed artist's home which was dubbed Derby's 'ugliest' building
People want to know more about the building and its history
Fresh talks have taken place regarding the future of what was once described as Derby’s "most unsightly" building – the home of one of the city’s most celebrated residents. A virtual meeting was held suggesting what could be done to improve and bring back to life the 17th-century Joseph Wright House on Queen Street – the former home of the famous artist whose works are celebrated today at Derby Museum and Art Gallery and other venues.
Joseph Wright? He did that famous "Bird in the vacuum" picture, I think. Although he's always known as "Joseph Wright of Derby", for some odd reason, I never until now actually thought of him living there!
ReplyDeleteBut yes, fine old building. I can see a far uglier one next door. Speaks volumes that people think it ugly.
Sam - Derby museum has a good collection of Joseph Wright's work plus an interesting collection of documents such as preliminary sketches. How his house was allowed to fall into that state I don't know. It's probably flooded by now.

Doonhamer - yes, it would be no surprise if a property developer wants the site for a carbuncle.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly has a lot of character. Was it something to do with the railway at one point?
