  1. Another one of those enthusiastic blokes (and they nearly always seem to be blokes...) who makes you want to watch more. I'll have a look at some of the other videos that he's done.

  2. You're quick off the mark, AK!

Only recently, some nobody on the awful BBC was whingeing about the number of presenters with received pronunciation, and the dearth of South London speech!

You may possibly remember Jimmy Edwards on 'Take it from here', when he was in a posh restaurant and ordering 'Grice'...

Scrobs - I don't remember that Jimmy Edwards sketch, but I'll look it up. It's the kind of thing which brings back memories of our old wireless in a wooden case.

  4. I saw a blog comment a few months back. Somebody had been buying petrol near Stirling and overheard some children speaking. He was astonished: they pronounced every syllable.

I suppose he was used to the London habit of swallowing whole syllables. When I first moved south I found I couldn't understand the receptionist in our lab over the phone. I always had to invent an excuse to go downstairs to speak to her: I suppose her lip movements helped make her just about comprehensible in person.

It was great shame; she was a pleasant lass and a willing worker but her accent was unlikely to help her progress. I'd guess that more than 50% of the UK population would have had trouble understanding her.

  5. dearieme - I recently walked past two chaps chatting to each other and only realised they were speaking English when I caught a word or two. It's partly my age, but partly their slurred diction. They were swallowing whole syllables too - everything ran together.
