Oldfool

You may or may not have visited Oldfool's blog - linked on my sidebar, but he has posted his last post. According to one of the comments he had a stroke on Sunday and passed away. I've been slow to post on his death in case it isn't so. Sadly it seems to be so.

I never commented on Oldfool's blog, but he wrote some delightful stories. His last post is particularly poignant.

  1. I had never read this one, but had a look. You're right, a very poignant set of events, particularly with the family contributing to the comments.

It raises lots of questions as to appropriate behaviour - and indeed feelings - when an admired blogger passes away. Will the site remain as a permanent memorial, still visited years later by a few who remember him? How many go without their readers knowing it is death rather than giving up which has terminated the posts? I guess there has been no time yet to work out a set of appropriate conventions.

No man is an island, etc. Keep eating your five-a-day and do everything the Department for Public Intrusion tell you, AKH, as we would miss you!

  2. Sam - thanks. I eat a lot of fish and I'm off on a ten mile walk tomorrow!

  3. I did follow him...and his last post was concerning. How can I feel so sad for somebody I didn't even know?

  4. Bike Hermit - when a guy writes that well and puts in so much personal stuff I think there's a sense in which we do get to know him.

At least it feels the same.
