Spot the difference

Originally built as a Victorian police station near Dunster, Somerset.


Alfreton police station Derbyshire

I'd say the lower picture shows a paramilitary fortress, while the upper picture doesn't.

    The upper picture shows a gingerbread house, a la Hansel and Gretel. Perhaps they hadn't invented doughnuts by then.

    Sam - welcome back. How was Dartmoor?

    It is a bit of a gingerbread house. The architect was John Norton who designed it before starting on Tyntesfield House near Bristol.

    Whoever designed the Alfreton job should have their eyes pulled out and their hands chopped off - its ghastly.

    Surely they only throw the odd mangle-wurzel down in 'mummerzet'. Unnecessary?

    Roger - the Alfreton job is quite sinister to look at. Note the small, high ground-floor windows. There are two CCTV cameras on each corner and what looks like an armoured entrance door.

    As for the mummerzet job, it seems a bit over the top.

    Hi AKH - Dartmoor was great, thanks. The weather-window opened, and we sailed gracefully through without grazing the sides.

    Ah, Tyntesfield. Have you ever been? I didn't think the building itself was so brilliant, but liked the small corner where the last owner lived before keeling over. Military history and adventure books, cheese on toast, and a bottle of decent red with everything.

    No I haven't been to Tyntesfield, only seen pictures, but isn't that Heaven you are describing?
