When Christmas card lists become shorter

I've just discovered that a relative by marriage died earlier this year. We hadn't seen each other for years and he never mastered email, although we did exchange Christmas cards. It's that time of life I suppose, where the Christmas card list seems to become a little shorter each year.

I've always assumed that the tradition of sending cards would go out of fashion, but card shops still seem to flourish and supermarkets still stock them.

My father had a simple approach after Mum died - he didn't bother with cards at all.

Wrote a few cards this year, that's all done ... I'll send a few ecards, that's it.

We've just lost a friend whose card had been posted to us before her unexpected death. We still exchange cards with the ex-wife of an old rugby friend of mine. We don't know whether he's still alive but we've not heard from him in years.

It occurred to me the other day: old friends from school I'm still in touch with: none. From university: one. From the rugby club: none. From our Australian days: none. From our NZ days: none.

On the other hand, from my last job: several. From my first job: several.

Mrs B does all our cards
She did point out recently that we haven't been invited to a wedding for a long time, and I had to remind her that we've reached the time of life where you go to more funerals than weddings

James - mine are all done too. It's a job I dislike but they are all done.

dearieme - I'm still in touch with a number of people from my last job as is Mrs H who still meets up with a friend from school. Chatting with a cousin the other day about relatives we haven't seen for decades - we realise that we may not hear if they have died.

Bucko - yes, funerals creep up on you like that. We've made our excuses for one or two because it becomes rather depressing.

A few years ago I bought a label printer to print address labels for Christmas cards. It saved a lot of time and was far neater than handwriting (which is becoming erratic through disuse).

The number of labels I print off every December is slowly reducing...

DJ - I wondered about doing something like that. Never got round to it but now we'd be at the same stage - fewer and fewer labels each year.
