Pronounced as "wane" .I think it derived from "wee yin" , small one. It is a West side of Scotland word. On the East side of Scotland, and North England the word "bairn" is used. A slightly altered very Olde English word.

Doonhamer - I don't know but I assumed there some connection with 'wean' as in weaning a baby.
