Amount of electricity needed to power world's data centres expected to double in five years
The rise in demand, predicted to be highly concentrated around the world's tech and population hubs, will put pressure on utility companies, grid infrastructure and the planet.
It will come as racks of servers hosting the latest AI models and cloud computing services use three times more electricity than the UK each year, the agency added.
More solar panels from China?
More domestic heat pumps?
More EV charging stations?

ReplyDeleteInitially at least, our diminished capacity to generate will probably mean that we have to buy the energy at hiked-up rates, which will mean that we won't be needing all that much of it. We will probably get by on selling goods and services overseas which can pay for energy, but there will be less demand for it because the rest of us won't need AI as we won't be able to afford computers that can access it.
ReplyDeleteSam - maybe there won't be enough energy to run the BBC, self-sufficiency will be the thing and we'll have to make our own entertainment. It's all very unpredictable, even interestingly unpredictable.
