A fascinating little video about an interesting man. A fair chance that much of his journey was done in complete darkness, made worse by foul weather, clouds, which would have completed the darkness. Doonhamer - he may have stopped at inns on the way to dry off by the fire if the weather was bad, but it was quite a feat because as you say the roads would have been atrocious. Although it doesn't say so, he may have taken a couple of pistols with him too, because poor roads weren't all he might have to deal with.
