Today Mrs H and I had lunch with my cousin and his wife in a pub in the outskirts of Derby. It’s an area we know well, although we left the area well over thirty years ago.
On the drive home we trundled round the Derby ring-road in fairly heavy traffic as usual, then foot down and off we went up the A38.
Both Mrs H and I had the same thought once we hit the A38. We soon see hills, villages and green fields and whenever we travel this way our immediate sensation is always the same – it’s good to be leaving Derby behind again.
Good for the soul.
ReplyDeleteJames - it is. We thought of going to Derby occasionally just to experience the pleasure of leaving.
ReplyDeleteI've just spent a few hours cycling round Portsmouth, trying to get to know it. Funny how the really deprived bits are still more interesting than the totally dull areas. It's the miserable sense of nothing ever happening that's the worst.
ReplyDeleteSam - something we've noticed about the more expensive residential areas of towns is how quietly dull they are. Maybe they are the two main options, dull or deprived.
ReplyDeleteI went to Derby once - I recall describing it (to family) as "The last place God built, and he left his shovel behind"...
ReplyDeleteDave - whatever is done in Derby has never been done well. It has never known how to make the best of what it already has.
