Merely a change of emphasis perhaps, but quite rapid presumably. A chap is bound to wonder what caused it.

    Much is made of the period of mourning for the Queen, but I doubt if talking, thinking and planning behind the scenes all stopped. If Truss and the Quasi-Chancellor had any sense, they would have used this time to model their tax cuts and to sound out how they would be received by their MPs, the media, and the public.

    Boris apparently spent decades planning his ascent to the top job; cultivating the right people, adjusting his image, and working through the lesser but high-profile jobs in anticipation. Truss comes across as the Head Girl who suddenly has to run the school for a week because the teachers are on strike.

    Sam - yes, it is already apparent that Truss probably hasn't been cultivating the right people. At least not effectively. It leaves open a question of whether she could ever have cultivated the right people to allow for even a modestly radical agenda. Possibly not.
