Some people seem to keep working at creating order and a coherent world for themselves, whereas others just let go into chaos. It's not just mental toughness, nor intelligence, but some other quality between the two.
Sam - there are also lots of examples of people testing themselves in a somewhat similar way. Trekking through remote areas where survival skills are important, as if there is something to be gained by discarding the encumbrances of daily life for a while.
