Lightning Strike

Passing through woodland yesterday, we came across this tree which had been struck by lightning during recent thunderstorms. Not an uncommon sight, but all that freshly smashed wood was a reminder of how powerful a lightning strike can be. It was smashed as if struck from above by a single clumsy blow from a gigantic axe.

  1. We actually went to see the results of a witnessed lightning strike, which was posted on Facebook and collected quite a crowd. The wood (willow) was shredded into long thin strips like belts. I took one, but when it dried out it turned into a boring splintery stick.

  2. Sam - there were splintery sticks scattered around this tree, one of them pretty big. It gave a feel for the force needed to blast it out of the the main trunk.
