Why Saga cruises are expensive

Why indeed. One comment from Cruising Mates [!] suggests :-

The other thing about Saga is they have less room on their ships for cabins as they have larger capacity morgues than is usual. A typical 70,000 - 100,000 tonne has 2-3 places, Saga ships have 5-7.

They tend to keep this relatively quiet, but i found out from my mother ( who has done 3 world cruises with them + other shorter cruises) as that is the sort of question she would ask , especially on the longer sea passages.

  1. This is a very rich seam for the student of the absurd. "Cruising Mates" must have millions of hits which only last three seconds; people realising that it was not um, exactly what they were looking for, before following up that lead on "Muscle-boy Rampage".

And I love the bit about the morgue capacity being higher for Saga. I had initial visions of whole decks given over to the refrigerated remains of tanned British philistines. A maximum of 7 per voyage? I suppose that if they have a bad outbreak of 'flu they could do a few burials at sea. You could, of course, pay less for this. And even less if you brought your own ballast.

  2. Still, with all that refrigeration - if anything happened like ...

  3. But do they navigate by dead reckoning?

  4. Sam - seven sounds too few to me too. Of course in the days of coal, a bit of ballast would have been no problem.

James - cool customers on a Saga tour.

    Demetrius - oh dear (:

Indeed Sam. And sometimes obscure blogs are found by people searching for 'Cruising Mates'!
