Thanks for this. How decent and gentle they all seem. No offensive showing off or intimidating behaviour. Even the boys restrict themselves to capering about and waving their hats as if their excitement is tempered by deference. This little clip lifts the spirits in a way that is difficult to describe.

In the days when a week's worth of fresh air was heaven.

Demetrius - wouldn't it be amazing if it was?

Sam - yes it struck me that way too. There is a lesson and a blog post in it somewhere because I don't think we have grasped what we have lost.

Sackers - we find that holidays are easily forgotten, possibly because we take so many.

My Grandmother was one of eight children whose annual holiday was one day on the foreshore at Dovercourt near Ipswich. For 1d they bought a kettle of boiling water to make tea with. A very different world back then. Six to a room in a back street courtyard.

Derek - my mother was one of eleven, but by the time the younger ones were born the older ones were working. They seem to have been happy with very little.
