Watch

I've been looking for a new watch, but these are out of my league. I don't think I'd buy one even if I had the money. Impressive as a feat of micro-engineering, but so are the silicon chips inside a cheap quartz watch.

For example, I recently bought a new camera plus a 30Gb SD card. The SD card was just over a tenner and to my mind that's a much more amazing feat of engineering.

After I no longer had to wind watches and clocks up I had to turn to winding people up. It is a lot more fun but low on accuracy.

Haven't worn a watch since I retired. Symbolic I think!

If you get the opportunity, seek out a documentary (available on Netflix) called the Watchmaker's Apprentice. It tells of George Daniels, and a young chap by the name of Roger Smith who came to him to be an apprentice, though at first he was turned away. 'Google' either and you'll come up with some interesting information.

I've bought a couple of watches from our local cheridee shop, so I don't muck up my best one in the garden...

The latest cost £2.00, and a quick visit to Ebay for a couple of bits for the strap, and a new battery, means that I have an original (fake) watch for about seven pounds which seems reasonable to me, as I only want it to tell the time...

All those dials - like a dog walking on its hind legs. Choosing a watch is a delicate business, definitely says something about a chap.

Demetrius - and sometimes people keep going for longer than a watch. As Guardian comments testify.

Woodsy - I don't wear one at the moment and apart from glancing at my wrist every now and then I don't miss it.

Derek - I saw a TV programme on him some years ago but I didn't know about Roger Smith. If I had vast amounts of money, I can imagine treating myself to a George Daniels timepiece.

Michael - I'll probably end up with a cheap watch which looks okay.

Roger - but do people notice? Only a few I suspect.
