A difference of opinion

Grandson (aged 7) told me about the new school food regulations today. He thinks the idea is stupid.

On the other hand Nick Clegg (aged 48) thinks it's a good idea.

Nick however, is an unreliable authoritarian tit so I'm with Grandson on this one.

To be fair, in some respects he is completely reliable.

There's probably an interesting book to be written on the topic of how the followers of J.S.Mill developed such a lust for control, censorship, and repression.

Sam - I prefer not to be fair in Clegg's case but I know what you mean.

As for the book, I think Mill must be looking on in despair. Or maybe not - who knows?

I recall the Schools Meals Services of old run by some formidable ladies who really did know their onions. Our local one had a master butcher checking the meat supplies etc. But as we rolled into the 70's the parents were complaining that the kids were being deprived of packaged and processed foods and high sugar ones. Fried food then was a problem and very costly for the most part for mass feeding.

Come, come AK, you know full well that all child behaviour problems and all educational problems are due to two great evils - school cabbage and school gipsy tart. They needed stamping out, these items alone have ruined the lives of so so many. Then of course there is the difficulty of finding decent middle class jobs these days - especially for dollops. So what better than creating a new regulation industry - you know it makes sense.

Roger - in my school it was steak and kidney pud - unimaginably vile and I'll eat virtually anything.

Even so, we survived cross-country runs in the freezing rain. Can't see yoghurt and lettuce salad being sufficient.

Demetrius - our school meals in the sixties were pretty dire. I recall a vile steak and kidney pud which was almost entirely greasy pud. Also sago pud with a spoonful of sweet red stuff in the middle. Even the chips were poor.

I never met any gypsy tarts when I was at school.

Probably just as well really.

WY - I didn't either but she sounds exotic.
