We hear things retrospectively when we have understood them - Marcel Proust
There's a bridge like this in my home town (in fact there's two, but one gets hit more often than the other). What I have never under stood is why the highway authorities (or the bridge owners for that matter) don't put up a barrier either side of the bridge, perhaps 25 -50m away, thats the same height at the bridge. With a breakaway mechanism, so you hit it, there's a loud bang, it folds upwards, and you stop your vehicle to see whats happened. Thus preventing the bridge from being hit so many times.
Sobers - in Derby there is a very low bridge with heavy chains hanging down at bridge height. If you are too high you run into the chains which presumably makes quite a din.
