Are you too nice?

Are you too nice?

Many people are I fear. Too nice in a political sense, not cynical enough sense, easily persuaded as to good intentions. It's a good idea to avoid nice when doing politics, to be cynical, doubting and mistrustful. Members of the political elite don't know you or wish to know you.

They aren't nice.

The bastards understand the advantages of not being nice to nice people.

I tend to be both cynical and nice, in the sense that in the abstract I am scathing about politicians and others; yet tend to go for the easy option of appeasement and conflict-avoidance in everyday life. I've almost certainly got it the wrong way round.

We ought to be careful not to get infected by other people's nastiness and lying. They win when they make us cynical. I like the biblical injunction to be "wise as serpents, but harmless as doves". Don't be taken in by them, but don't join in with pallid versions of their own magisterial psychopathology.

Sam - "I've almost certainly got it the wrong way round." Not unless you are highly ambitious I'd say.

Well, bored with telly I turned the pages of 'OED of English Proverbs' and came across this little saying that fits nicely, well actually it is not nice at all but quite amusing:- "The more you tramp on a turd the broader it grows". Nuff said.

Roger - not if you have bare feet. It oozes up between your toes.
