North Korean theme park

Why is North Korea building this huge new theme park? Purely for propaganda reasons is my guess. Much the same kind of display all totalitarian (and not so totalitarian) regimes go in for on a massive scale.

Bread and circuses without the bread.

Somehow I find it remarkably grisly, even more so than strutting military parades.

More here.

How very different from our own dear theme parks! But I bet the rides run on time.

A little theme park story to speed your recovery.

My father-in-law is a steam buff, and works on the Watercress Line in Hampshire. It terminates at the market town of Alton, and families often get the mainline train down from London, where they change onto Thomas the Tank Engine and friends.

Last year, a harassed-looking dad with about six kids in tow, plus numerous bags and hampers, got off the train from London.

"Right", he said, "Where are the towers, please?"

Silence.

"Alton Towers?"

Sam - very good! Reminds me of a phone call from one of our managers in his car on the way home to south Wales after a meeting near Portsmouth.

"...where am I now? Bloody hell I'm on the M25."
